Many of us have been experimenting with several strategies for us to improve our health and well-being. Trying different routines, planning workouts, scheduling diets, attending sessions, and many more. But are we making progress? Are we improving the system while we are improving ourselves? Are we building community while we focus on SELF-care? What are we missing? What story is the medical data telling us? Has anyone even thought to ask?
Over the next few weeks, we will discuss the different components of the journey to wellness and its potential impact. Let's begin with a glimpse into the past.
“The mind may not remember, but the body does.”
― Resilience Documentary
Wellness is a combination of different dimensions. It does not focus on just physical health. It is linked to the different aspects of one's life such as mental, emotional, intellectual, social, financial, environmental, and occupational. With this in mind, physical health alone can be hard to achieve for reasons other than how much you work out, what you eat, and how much you sleep.
We hear all the time that to meet your health and wellness goals you must follow in love with the process or commit to the commitment. While this may be true and effective for some, identifying the root causes of our challenges with health and wellness is an integral part of the journey.
Take physical movement for example; we know that physical movement helps reduce stress and cortisol levels in our body, so why isn't it simple and easy for us to do so? Why But what happens when we don't move? And more importantly, why aren't we moving?
Here are some questions we encourage you to reflect on:
Note: These questions can be applied to any dimension of wellness.
The response to these questions will more than likely connect you to an experience and/or member from the past. And for some a traumatic one. Traumas, if unacknowledged or left untreated, remain in the body and when trauma is held in the body it impacts how we move, think, and behave.
In closing, taking a glimpse of the past can unlock and uncover the root cause of present-day challenges while revealing a path toward a future with resolutions. So take some time to look back and see if you can find the root cause of the challenges you are experiencing today.
While we does not offer services to help deal with the past, such as therapy, we highly recommend it! A trauma-informed approach to dealing with the past is to do it with a professional who can help you through it. Click here to learn more about how to access therapy in your area.
